Built By Girls Website Design Refresh

I interned at Yahoo and worked with the Ecosystems team to update the Built By Girls (a subbrand of Yahoo) website’s visual branding to match the target audience’s current aesthetics (ages 14-22).

Overview:

BUILT BY GIRLS (BBG) is a national community of ambitious GenZ women and gender non-conforming students that prepares the next generation of leaders to step into their power and break into their careers. The community provides professional guidance and practical tools to help those make their first career moves.

50K members (students and professionals)

63% are people of color

23% identify as LGBTQIA+

The Challenge:

With the shift in content on the Built By Girls website, how can the Ecosystems team create designs that accommodate the new changes while refreshing the website to align with the current GenZ trends?

Research and Brainstorming

Audit: Gen Z embodies a striking visual aesthetic infused with genuine emotional appeal.

Wireframes

I explored varying layouts utilizing existing elements in the brand guideline while also adding new ones to try and give it a fresh feel.

Design Round 1 (landing page)

I created mockups from the wireframes focusing on color distribution, spacing, and integration of imagery to enhance and complement the text.

Design Round 2 (landing page)

After receiving feedback, I made changes to the type by switching from a serif to a san serif font, incorporated more of the colors from the brand color palette, and developed a set hierarchy for button sizes and typefaces. I also experimented with more playful elements and their size.

Final Deliverables

I cleaned up and simplified the designs ensuring that all pages maintained a cohesive and harmonious visual identity. I then collaborated with a developer to refine the small details.
